Description
Mullein leaf can be used in teas or for incense. High in magnesium, iron, potassium, and sulfur. It has demulcent, emollient and astringent properties. Because mullein is very high in mucilage, the herb is traditionally used to make throat lozenges and syrups. It is also added to teas, used to produce skin care formulas or is tinctured. Mullein contains a chemical called rotenone, which is used as a broad-spectrum insecticide. In Europe, there is a long history of use of mullein in herbal tonics and skin care formulas. The flowers were once used to create yellow-green dye, and the leaves were used to insulate footwear and make candle wicking. Because of the high mucilage content of the leaf, mullein is commonly still used today to make topical ointments, salves and skin creams.
